This week Goscar’s Lesley Jones and Julie Watkins travelled to Cardiff for the 4th All Welsh Coaching Conference at the magnificent City Hall. Jointly hosted by the University of South Wales and Academi Wales, the event welcomed coaches, mentors, learning and development specialists, HR specialists, psychologists, and academics from a variety of fields, to explore ‘Challenging Limitations’ in coaching practice.

The conference was book-ended by two thought provoking keynote speakers: Professor Tatiana Bachkirova, Professor of Coaching Psychology and Co-Director of the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies at Oxford Brookes University, who shared her fascinating work on engaging with the multiplicity of self-models and matching self-stories with mini-selves; and John Neal, Performance Coach and Director of the Sports Business programme at Ashridge Executive Education, who gave an engaging, entertaining and often humorous talk that included managing the three brains, our concept of honesty, silencing the inner critic, and the relationship of our values to our version of success.

Throughout the day delegates were able to attend a selection of engaging and informative workshops including ‘Creating New Perspectives through NLP’ which was presented by Lesley and Julie, both of whom have trained with Pegasus NLP in the New Forest. Julie handled the presentation and music – Earth, Wind and Fire’s ‘September’ and Disturbed’s ‘Sounds of Silence’, both of which were used to demonstrate ‘anchors’.

Through a series of models, anecdotes and participatory exercises, Lesley also shared how she had incorporated the learning from her journey to NLP Master Practitioner into her coaching practice. She demonstrated tools and techniques to quickly establish rapport, better understand the coachee’s perspective, identify their most pressing challenge and set goals for successful outcomes.

We at Goscar really value the opportunity to share best practice and explore new ways of working with our colleagues and would like to take the opportunity thank the University of South Wales and Academi Wales for hosting this event, which is growing in strength and popularity year on year. We will be looking forward to the 5th Annual Welsh Coaching Conference in 2018.
